Marine Geology Data

The NGDC Marine Geology Inventory provides access to all marine geology data archived by, and available through NGDC, regardless of data format. Marine geologic data types include descriptions and analyses of marine sediment and hard rock samples. Parameters include collecting institution, ship, cruise, sample identifier, date, latitude/longitude, water depth in corrected meters, type of sampling device, and type(s) of descriptive/analytical data available through NGDC and the World Data Center for GMG, Boulder for each sample. Inventory information is included for several hundred reports/data sets including data from over 132,000 seafloor samples. Data sources include academic institutions, NOAA, other US government agencies, foreign countries, and a few private companies. Most data sets are directly viewable and/or downloadable through the inventory. In addition to the map service, there is also a text search interface available.

Geology Data Sets by cjm
Locations of all samples for which descriptions and/or analyses are available in NGDC's marine geology data archives. Contains links to view .PDF copies of reports and to download digital data online for free. Data on other formats, such as oversize charts or microfilm are described, but offered offline. There is an alternative text interface.

The layer is from the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples database. NOS Seabed Descriptions
This layer contains sample locations and brief lithologic descriptions for thousands of small grabs samples colleted during NOS hydrographic surveys. Some data were coded from M sheets by the Smithsonian Institution and represent samples archived there. Other data were digitized from NOS smooth sheets under contract to NOS/managed by NGDC. This layer also includes links to related survey data and products in the NOS Hydrographic database.

Deck41 Seabed Descriptions
This layer contains brief lithologic descriptions compiled by NOAA personnel up to 1975, when the MGG group was at NODC, before its transfer to NGDC. These data were abstracted from mostly unpublished data reports, many of which are available in their original form from NGDC.
