Hollings Scholar Prepares for NOAA Internship [February 06, 2012]
On February 13-14, NOAA Hollings Scholar Ranjeetha Bharath will visit the National Geophysical Data Center in preparation for her summer 2012 internship. Ms. Bharath is currently a junior in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She will be working this summer with Juan Rodriguez and other staff on the project "Studies of Solar Energetic Particle Events in Support of Future Products." The Hollings Scholarship Program (named for Senator Ernest F. Hollings) provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with hands-on practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities.

NOAA to Attend Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Workshop in Thailand [February 06, 2012]
On February 13, Dr. Chris Elvidge of the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) will chair a 90-minute workshop titled "VIIRS Data Evaluation Over Thailand and Japan". The workshop has been organized by the Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) Earth Monitoring Working Group, which is co-chaired by Dr. Elvidge. In the session, Dr. Elvidge will provide an overview of VIIRS, demonstrate data access via NOAA's Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System, and review examples of nighttime 'Day Night Band' images of Thailand compared to OLS data acquired the same nights. Two other presenters will review day and night VIIRS data acquired over Japan and Thailand. Both countries anticipate operating direct readout stations to collect VIIRS data.

National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) To Participate in NOAA West Team Meeting [February 06, 2012]
On February 15-16, Susan McLean will participate in the NOAA Western Regional Team Meeting in Portland, OR. The NOAA West team is comprised of 17 subject matter experts from all five NOAA business lines and one partner organization (Sea Grant) located in offices across the 11 states in the region. The team is dedicated to promoting collaboration across NOAA, and with stakeholders and partners, to better understand needs for NOAA products and services, and to work on meeting those needs through improved communications, interdisciplinary partnerships and innovative projects. The meeting in Portland will focus on identifying and prioritizing activity for FY12, including western water issues from drought to Columbia River issues for fisheries management, energy, and salmon. Susan McLean will also brief the team on the priorities from the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program's (NTHMP) recent national meeting. The NTHMP, led by NOAA and comprised of coastal state and federal partners, is a key partner in western region where the tsunami hazard is high. The only U.S. death from the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami occurred in California, along with most of the nearly $130 million in damage to coastal facilities. The $210 billion in estimated losses worldwide made the tsunami the costliest natural catastrophe of all time.
