NOAA R/V Gandy (F6501) F6501 The 1973 aluminum 65' vessel was constructed by Alumaship Corporation of Jeanerette, LA as an Aids to Navigation Vessel (Buoy Tender). The boat was acquired by NOAA Marine Fisheries and refitted as a research vessel. Originally fitted with Detroit diesel engines, the refit included new Cummins diesels and a Cummins Onan/John Deere powered generator for extended offshore stay. The vessel contains berthing for 6, a full galley, and head. Hull updates included the removal of a keel extender and the addition of outriggers for stability in rough seas. The Gandy is fitted with a full electronics package for safe and reliable navigation.
