[Image] GeoVu for Macintosh [Image] -------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The GeoVu Data Browser now has added functionality. If you have used previous versions of GeoVu, you will have little to learn to use the new Macintosh version. The functions you are familiar with operate in the same way (if you find something that doesn't, let us know; see: GeoVu/FreeForm bugs). If you are new to GeoVu, you will find it to be somewhat different from other image/data viewers you may have used. Read the documentation thoroughly to get a good sense of how to take advantage of it. Some of the user interface paradigms are different from what Mac users may expect. View Data in Various Formats If you have used earlier versions of GeoVu to view your data, then you can use this version to view the same data, with the same menu files. If you are new to GeoVu: you can view a number of widely used data formats, for both image and point data, as well as metadata: additional information and details about the data that the data publisher associated with each data file or set of files. For more details, see GeoVu Data Browser. Obtaining GeoVu Mac * GeoVu Windows is available on-line: ftp://ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov/Solid_Earth/Access_Tools/GeoVu/Mac/geovu.sea.hqx. The file "geovu.sea.hqx" is a self-extracting archive file. * You can also download these files via anonymous FTP from "ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov" in the "Access_Tools/GeoVu/Mac" directory. Below is an example of an FTP session run from the command line, but you may have easier-to-use Macintosh FTP software for this purpose. Be sure to download the file in ASCII mode. ftp ftp.ngdc.noaa.gov Name: anonymous 331 Guest login ok, send e-mail address as password. Password: ftp> cd Access_Tools/GeoVu/Mac ftp> ascii ftp> get geovu.sea.hqx ftp> bye * Newer CD-ROMs from NGDC include "geovu.sea.hqx" in the "mac" subdirectory under "\software\geovu". On older NGDC CD-ROMs, look for GeoVu files in "\software"; subdirectories may vary. * You can ask us to send you GeoVu on diskettes: Solid Earth Geophysics Division, E/GC1 National Geophysical Data Center 325 Broadway Boulder, CO 80303 (303) 497-6472 geovu@ngdc.noaa.gov You can also download (from the above ftp site) a full set of user documentation in a variety of formats: * Software and Documentation download page Installing GeoVu Mac Installing GeoVu is straightforward, but the procedure differs slightly depending on how you obtained it. Your installation directory should be empty. FTP or World Wide Web 1. When you download geovu.sea.hqx, decoding and installation of the geovu folder onto your hard disk may take place automatically depending on the setup of your FTP or Web software. If only the geovu.sea.hqx file is installed, decode it with StuffIt Expander or BinHex. These are free software utilities available in many places on the Web including http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html. 2. After decoding, double-click the geovu.sea icon to install the geovu folder wherever you want on your hard drive. If you use StuffIt, this may happen automatically, depending on your settings. CD-ROM 1. Copy the file geovu.sea.hqx to your hard drive (truncated to geovu_se.hqx or geovusea.hqx) from the \software\geovu\mac directory on the CD-ROM (\software on older NGDC CD-ROMs) to your hard drive. The file name is truncated because the CD-ROM was made on a DOS-based PC. 2. Decode geovu.sea.hqx, then double-click the geovu.sea icon. (See the FTP/WWW procedure above.) Diskettes Just double-click the geovu.sea icon to install the geovu folder anywhere you like on your hard drive. Viewing Data with GeoVu 1. Newer NGDC CD-ROMs include menu files and other ancillary files needed by GeoVu in a directory in the "gv_misc" subdirectory under "\software\geovu\mac". 2. If you are using an older CD-ROM or downloaded the data collection via the Internet, these menu files may be in other directories. Look for files ending with the characters "men". 3. Copy the menu file(s) from the data's location (usually a CD-ROM) to your GeoVu directory. Note that these are "data menus", which are different from the regular Macintosh pull-down menus. 4. Start GeoVu and choose "Set Data..." from the File menu. The Data Source dialog is displayed. A data source is a collection of data files on a CD-ROM, hard disk, or diskette. 5. Change (if necessary) the path shown in the text box with the title "CD-drive or data's drive" to that of the directory where the data source is located. This is typically just the name of the CD-ROM as it appears on your desktop. (If the data is on a hard drive, you need to specify both it's name and the path to the folder where the data's folder is. Eg: "My Hard Drive:Cool Data" [":" separates folders].) 6. Choose the file that you want to view; you may have to navigate (with double-clicks) through several menu levels. An Introduction screen is usually displayed first with some information about the data collection. If the data publisher has activated the automatic display function, the data file is displayed when you choose it. If not, you need to define a search. 7. Select Create from the Search menu to display the dialog or window in which you can set search criteria. For image data, the Image Search Parameters dialog is displayed; for point data, the Plots:Title window appears. 8. Set the criteria as you wish (specify geographic limits, display attributes, and so on), or click OK (image) or GO (point) to accept the defaults. The data are displayed in a new window. 9. You can now examine the data in more detail with the tools on the right side of the window, or open more data windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- Data Access Technologies and SoftWare Applications Team Solid Earth Geophysics Division, E/GC1 National Geophysical Data Center 325 Broadway Boulder, CO 80303 (303) 497-6472 Internet Mail: geovu@ngdc.noaa.gov Web Home: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/seg/swat/
