W. Mendelssohn Seamount, NW Slope

Comments: ~ 50 lbs. 1 cloth bag. 1 large slab. 20 hand specimens. All samples had some Fe-Mn crust. Large slab is 72 x 73 x 7 cm Mn crust pavement, with ~ 1 cm thick Fe-Mn on substrate of altered hyloclastite breccia and calcareous (?) mudstone. Substrate ranges from slightly altered to moderately altered to altered vesicular to massive basalt, altered hyloclastite breccia, altered hyloclastite-basalt conglomerate, altered hyloclastite tuff breccia and brown calcareous (?) mudstone. Fe-Mn crusts range from 1 1/2 cm to 1 mm in thickness. Depth Range: 2300 - 3000 m (conservative 2200 - 3100 m).
