W Pacific Ocean, Manus Basin. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt; pumice
1 :
Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: ~65 kg of very glassy lavas of 3 types. A) Very vesicular lavas: ~0.2 cm shperical vesicles; glass crusts no thicker than 0.5 cm (also very vesicular; aphyric (?) -- there is one huge rock of this type. B) Massive pillow lavas: non-vesiculated glassy rinds (bulbous) <0.5 cm thick; dense pillows with phenocrysts of plagioclase and possibly amphibole. C) Glassy sheet flows: non-vesiculated, very black and shiny glass ~1.0 cm thick (average); nice drip features on bottoms; some irregular vesicles; minor plagioclase. Also, 1 peice of pumice + glass fragments.
