S Pacific Ocean, N Fiji Basin. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt

Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: Dredge consists of approx 100 lbs of not so fresh basalt, with palagonite, Fe oxidation & Mn. Large gas cavities are present in many samples. Pipe dredge of mud and 25-30 lbs of indurated seds. Sample 1 - pillow frag, no glass, abundant pc, scarce ol, coalescing vesicles, minor alteration, fine to med gained. Sample 2,5 - sheet pillow frags 0-4 mm aphyric glass, moderate pc, no ol, pipe vesicles and large gas cavities, minor alteration, fine grained. Sample 3 - large angular fragment, no glass, sparsely pc & ol phyric, no vesicles, large gas cavities, 0-3 mm Mn, minor palagonite & Fe, highly altered and fractured. Sample 4 - pillow frag, fine grained, 0-5 mm glass, minor alteration; sparsely pc phyric, no ol, minor vesicles but large gas cavities at base. Sample 6 - pillow frag, fine grained, 0-10 mm glass, totally aphyric, 0-2 mm lots of palagonite + Mn; pipe vesicles.
