S Pacific Ocean, N Fiji Basin. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt
1 :
Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: The dredge haul consisted of approx. 200 lbs of scoriaceous basalt and baked red mud. Abundant coral and bivalves were present on many samples. Sample 1,2,9 - scoria, brown, no glass, no xtals, vesicles .5 mm average, 0-4 mm oxidized rind, yellow clay. Sample 3 - scoria, red/brown banding, pc, ol xtals, vesicles .5 mm locally up to 3 mm, yellow clay. Sample 4 - scoria, black-brown, pc xtals, vesicles locally one size <1-10 mm, oxidized rim, yellow clay. Sample 5 - scoriaceous pillow frag, 0-7 mm glass; pc/ol glomerocryst, vesicles .5-1 mm, oxidation rim + yellow clay, relatively dense. Sample 6 - scoria, very fine grained, possibly glassy, relatively abundant pc, vesicles 1 mm, 5%, oxidation rind minor yellow clay; vesicles. Sample 7 - layered scoria, red + yellow mud, brown scoria, fine layer red mud; dark brn & vesicular. Sample 8 - scoriaceous pillow frag, pc ?ol, vesicle .5-15 mm size increases toward sfc, oxidation rind, minor yellow mud. Sample 10 - completely oxidized scoria, minor banding, xtals? pc, ol, hb??; .5 - 1 mm locally larger.
