E Pacific Ocean, East Pacific Rise. Chain bag dredge. Field description: basalt

Lithology/Mineralogy: igneous (extrusive/volcanic), basalt
Comments: ~ 115 kgs (?) basalt, massive with radiating fracture lines (go to surface). Pahoehoe appearing surface covered with thin (1 cm) layer of cracked glass (obsidian). Chunks up to 10 kgs. Gas bubble holes up to 2 cm - some conical (one containing white sediment (predominantly coccoliths with some forams)). Grades from glass on surface to dark grey fine crystalline interior. Brown fibrous substance in places on surface. Growth.
