Objectives of the 2013 Small Pelagics Acoustic/Trawl Survey were to sample the northern Gulf of Mexico with a 90-ft high opening trawl to facilitate assessments of abundance and distribution of small pelagic fish species, estimate size structures of sampled populations, collect ichtyoplankton samples to map distribution of fish eggs and larvae, collect profiles of conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, and transmisivity at each sample site, and collect splitbeam echosounder data.

The Simrad EK60 Scientific Sounder system is a new generation fishery researchtool, based on experience from the EK500. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system.

Gordon Gunter (GU)
The NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter primarily serves the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), assisting NMFS in accomplishing its responsibilities for conserving and managing our Nation's living marine resources. The ship's homeport is located at the NMFS Pascagoula Laboratory in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The Gordon Gunter operates primarily in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, and Caribbean Sea. The ship conducts scientific surveys of the health and abundance of fishery resources and marine mammals. The vessel is operated by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations.
