This data set provides a 20+ year archive of science-quality, 2Hz geosynchronous measurements of the magnetic field from eight NOAA spacecraft, GOES-8 through GOES-15. GOES-8 started the era of high cadence observations (2 Hz) as it began operations in 1995. While magnetometer data from GOES 8 - 15 satellites have been available for many years, the current data set offers several major improvements. The new archive includes the highest temporal cadence (2 Hz), recomputed means, corrected calibration parameters, updated quality flagging, vector measurements in geophysically relevant coordinates, and full ephemeris information. In addition, this data set follows a unified standard format -- netCDF-4 -- that is also used in GOES-R series Level 2 magnetometer files. The dataset spans the time period from 1995 to the present.
To improve empirical models of the geomagnetic field and to allow estimations of electromagnetic wave power in bands important for magnetospheric plasma processes.

NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.

series
NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information generated these data through a Big Earth Data Initiative (BEDI) grant received in 2016.
GOES magnetometer data provide high-resolution magnetic field readings in four different coordinate systems.
GOES magnetometer readings are used to measure geomagnetic storms.
magn-l2-hires and magn-l2-avg1m file formats will remain consistent.
TBD
GOES magnetometer measurements will be tagged to Univeral Time Coordinated (UTC). Accuracy is expected to be on the order of 1 second [TBR].
This archive was produced by and is archived at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).
NCEI created magn-l2-hires and magn-l2-avg1m GOES products using inputs provided by the NOAA/NWS Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). The Level 2 products required converting data to additional coordinate frames.

GOES 8-12 Series Magnetometer
magnetometer
Each satellite's magnetometer features three orthogonal flux-gate magnetometer elements provide magnetic field measurements in three mutually perpendicular components: HP, HE and HN. HP is perpendicular to the satellite's orbital plane. HE lies parallel to the satellite-Earth center line and points earthward. HN is perpendicular to both HP and HE, and points eastward. They measure the magnitude and direction of the Earth's geomagnetic field, detect variations in the magnetic field near the spacecraft, provide alerts of solar wind shocks or sudden impulses that impact the magnetosphere, and assess the level of geomagnetic activity.
GOES 13-15 Series Magnetometer
magnetometer
These spacecraft each feature dual flux-gate magnetometers on a 8.5 meter long boom. The magnetometers are provided by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), Inc. in Columbia, Maryland. They measure the magnitude and direction of the Earth's geomagnetic field, detect variations in the magnetic field near the spacecraft, provide alerts of solar wind shocks or sudden impulses that impact the magnetosphere, and assess the level of geomagnetic activity. One magnetometer sensor is mounted on the end of the boom 27.9 feet (8.5 m) from the spacecraft. The other is positioned on the same boom 2.6 feet (0.8 m) closer to the spacecraft. The second magnetometer sensor serves as a backup in case the first magnetometer sensor fails and provides for better calibration of the magnetometer data channel. The two magnetometers can operate independently and simultaneously. Each magnetometer features three orthogonal elements that provide magnetic field measurements in three mutually perpendicular components: HP, HE and HN. HP is perpendicular to the satellite's orbital plane. HE lies parallel to the satellite-Earth center line and points earthward. HN is perpendicular to both HP and HE, and points eastward.
