Processing Steps
  • 2013-11-01T00:00:00 -All data obtained by NGDC were converted to a common horizontal reference frame (WGS84) using the Proj4 Cartographic Projections Library. All bathymetry data were converted to MSL using single values offsets between various tidal datums based on information obtained from the Government of Bermuda, Ministry of Environment and Planning. The topographic data were left referenced to Bermuda Ordinance Datum (OD); the offset between MSL and the OD is approximately 0.9m. It was assumed the magnitude of this difference was less than the vertical accuracy associated with the data and spatial resolution of the grids.
  • 2013-11-01T00:00:00 -Datasets were visually inspected with ArcGIS, QT Modeler and MB-System for identification and editing of data anomalies, including but not limited to inconsistencies between overlapping or adjacent datasets, 'noisy' data, etc.
  • 2013-11-01T00:00:00 -All data were converted to UTF-8 XYZ files. A 1 arc-second bathymetric 'pre-surface' grid was generated using a tensioned spline algorithm within GMT's 'surface' utility that interpolated depth values to areas where data were sparse and/or nonexistent. The bathymetric 'pre-surface' was then imported into ArcGIS and clipped to the coastline of Bermuda to remove values over land. The clipped 'pre-surface' was then converted to UTF-8 XYZ point data.
  • 2013-11-01T00:00:00 -The final integrated 1 arc-second topo-bathy DEM was created using GMT's 'blockmedian' and 'surface' utilities. The topographic spot heights and bathymetric surface points were used as source datasets in the spline gridding algorithm. This raster was then converted to points for use as input in creation of the larger footprint, lower resolution 3 arc-second DEM.
  • 2013-11-01T00:00:00 -Using the points from the converted 1 arc-second DEM as well as bathymetric data outside the extent of the 1 arc-second grid, an integrated 3 arc-second DEM was created using MB-System's 'mbgrid' utility. Like the GMT 'surface' utility, it uses a tensioned spline gridding algorithm to interpolate depths where necessary. However, it also allows the user to define the relative weighting of each input dataset for consideration during the gridding process. Generally speaking, preferential weighting was given to more recent, higher-accuracy datasets.
  • 2013-11-01T00:00:00 -The 3 arc-second DEM was qualitatively evaluated to identify any artifacts that may have been introduced during the gridding process. If necessary, the data were edited and the gridding routine was re-run. Once the DEM was deemed suitable, it was compared to nautical charts to ensure data consistency.
