The Marine Ecosystems Analysis (MESA) Program, New York Bight Study was funded by NOAA and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The Atlas was a historical compilation of surficial sediment grain size analyses in the NY Bight from 1957-1979. 5,928 cores, grabs, and dredges are included from multiple cruises: (BCTS, BLM01B-BLM08B, FIM01-FIM14, HSV, LEI-A - LEI-M, OCSS, Quart1 - Quart5, RBCI02 - RBCI04, RBCII1 - RBCII4, and RECON). Data are in the historic 073 format. Data include collecting institution, ship, cruise, sample id, latitude/longitude, date of collection, water depth, sampling device, method of analysis, sample weight, sampled interval, raw weight percentages of sediment, within a given phi range. Some samples also have percentages of total gravel, sand, silt, clay, and statistical measurements such as mean, median, skewness, kurtosis, and standard deviation of grain size. These data are part of the larger NGDC Seafloor Sediment Grain Size Database. In addition to grain size data included in the atlas, this data set also contains related sediment geochemistry in the MESA 001 format, and some originator's grain size data in the MESA 003 format which were returned to the originator for error correction and may not be represented in the 073 format data.

Supplemental Information
The atlas is a historic compilation of all grain size data available for the MESA/NY Bight area at the time. NCEI archives a microfiche copy of the atlas, but it is interpretive only and not in the inventory. Cruises in the atlas include BCTS, BLM01B through BLM08B, FIM01 through FIM14, HSV, LEI-A through LEI-M, OCSS, QUART1 through QUART5, RBCI02 through RBCI04, RBCII1 through RBCII4, and RECON; other cruises in the atlas are not defined and additional cruises include MESA geochemistry data not in the atlas. Some cruises are replacements for data previously returned for correction, see lineage/processing notes.

Lineage information for:dataset
Lineage Statement Final resubmission of originator's data as a single historic compilation were received through the former National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) in February of 1980. Data were received on nine track magnetic tape in EBCDIC form as 80 character records blocked to 4000 characters per block. 22,566 records total for 5,961 samples were processed into the NGDC Seafloor Sediment Grain Size Database after extensive revision and the data are still not of high quality. Artifical 073 File IDs were created using the first six digits of the cruise/project to replace null fields. Data included BLM01B through BLM08B formerly on a VIMS submission, and also USGS (Red Bailey) 073 data from MGG06995003. Data contributed by the originator to NOAA's former NODC may be part of a larger compilation archived as oceanographic data. Related grain size data in the MESA 003 format (MGG03995004-5) and geochemical data in the MESA 001 format (MGG03995006) are included in this data set (see lineage description field for complete information).

Processing Steps
  • 2015-04-22T00:00:00 -NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
