issueIdentification:  IMLGS services layer OSU and discrete data sets MGG07005001 through MGG07995999
otherCitationDetails:  The Oregon State University (OSU) College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR) is a partner institution, contributing data to the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS) database. The IMLGS is a collaboration between NCEI and multiple institutions (some supported by NSF) and government agencies, created by the institutions to offer common data about, and discovery/access to geological samples in their sample repository collections. The purpose of the IMLGS is to promote new research on existing samples. The database is maintained by NCEI under the guidance of a Curators Consortium, composed of representatives from the partner institutions.
abstract:  The Oregon State University Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR) is a partner in the Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS) database, contributing information to the IMLGS to help researchers discover geological samples curated in their facility. The partner repository sends related data, documents, and imagery to NCEI for long-term archive, but the originating institution is the definitive source of information related to their sample collection. The OSU-MGR is located in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). It is a National Science Foundation (NSF) supported curation facility for marine rock and sediment samples. The facility contains over 10,900 square feet of refrigerated space and a 550 square foot walk in freezer of -20 degrees F cold storage and is well equipped for preservation and distribution of marine geological samples for scientific research and education.
purpose:  The mission of the OSU-MGR is to facilitate research, education, and the advancement of scientific knowledge through access and preservation of their diverse collection of rock, lake, and marine sediment samples from around the world?s oceans, including the Arctic and the Southern Oceans.
credit:  The Oregon State University Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR) receives substantial support from the U.S. National Science Foundation as well as from NOAA Ocean Exploration.

supplementalInformation:  The marine sediment and rock collection at the Oregon State University Marine and Geology Repository (OSU-MGR) comes from all oceans. As of 2021, the OSU-MGR contains over 15,200 meters of marine sediment from over 6,600 cores, over 560 meters of lake sediment from 199 core sites, more than 14,600 rocks from over 529 dredges, 365 rocks from 187 NOAA ROV dives, 528 Manganese Nodules and 1,600 sediment trap samples. In recent years, the OSU-MGR has distributed about 8,000 samples per year to scientists throughout the world. Additional related data and information are available directly from the contributing institution, which is the authoritative and most current source of data and information related to their sample collection. The IMLGS contains a subset of summary metadata from the institutional database. Dr. Hans Schroeder, former OSU Curator, participated in the design of the original IMLGS. Dr. Richard Roberts, former University of Washington (UW) Curator, also participated in the design of the original IMLGS. The UW collection was transferred to OSU when the UW repository closed.

evaluationMethodDescription:  Samples are intermittently collected and added to the repository collection. Completeness of data in the IMLGS is determined by submission schedule of the repository.
            result: (unknown)
        report:  (DQ_CompletenessOmission)
evaluationMethodDescription:  Some recently collected samples may still be in processing by the sample repository and not yet available via searches of the IMLGS.
            result: (unknown)
        report:  (DQ_ConceptualConsistency)
measureDescription:  NCEI works with the partner institutions to ensure that sample data published in the IMLGS conforms to agreed upon formats and vocabularies, but cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information itself.
            result: (unknown)
        report:  (DQ_AbsoluteExternalPositionalAccuracy)
            nameOfMeasure:  Horizontal Positional Accuracy
            measureDescription: (unknown)
evaluationMethodDescription:  The horizontal accuracy of data values is approximately .001 degree of latitude/longitude.
            result: (unknown)
        report:  (DQ_QuantitativeAttributeAccuracy)
            nameOfMeasure:  Reliability
            measureDescription: (unknown)
evaluationMethodDescription:  Quality control is performed by originator and also in coordination with NCEI after data submission. Numeric data are subjected to out of range testing at NCEI, then posted on a test web site for inspection by the originator. Data are iteratively corrected at NCEI until the originator approves their publication to the production database.
            result: (unknown)
        lineage:  (LI_Lineage)
statement:  Data are received by NCEI on an intermittent basis from the repository. Incoming data are checked for adherence to controlled vocabularies, illegal data types in numeric fields, and out of range latitudes/longitudes. NCEI adds IGSNs/links to related resources, where known, and may perform cursory visual inspection of data for reasonableness, asking the originator for guidance on discrepancies. NCEI informs the originator upon ingest of data to the IMLGS database, after which the originator provides one final quality control using the IMLGS map viewer. Data may also be updated/corrected at any time, at the originator's request.

description:  The OSU-MGR source database is available online. Searches of sample locations, related data and information on the OSU collection is available from the OSU-MGR website. Additional related data and information are available directly from the contributing institution, which is the authoritative and most current source of data and information related to their sample collection. The IMLGS contains a subset of summary metadata from the institutional database.
