Count Component Title Abstract
1 NESDIS Hazard Mapping System Fire and Smoke Program The Satellite Services Division of NESDIS/NOAA created an interactive Web-based GIS used to display satellite data of fire detects in near-real time. It converts the data to a format compatible with ArcIMS and creates a steady flow of the data to the Web Server. The Web Server updates the data being displayed on the internet by deleting the old data and displaying new data. The analyzed fires and smoke layer are update primarily between the hours of 1 pm and 11 pm Eastern time, with occasional updates during the rest of the day. The automated layers are updated twenty-four hours a day as new satellite imagery is received. The product covers the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.

1 The information on fire position should be used as a general guidance and for strategic planning. Tactical decisions, such as the activation of a response to fight these fires, should not be made without other information to corroborate the fire's existence and location. This server and data are not considered "operational". We do not guarantee availabilityor timely delivery of data and the server should not be used to support operationalobservation, forecasting, emergency, or disaster mitigation operations, either public orprivate.

    Count Component DateTime Description
1 2002-01-01T00:00:00 The Hazard Mapping System Fire and Smoke Program is an interactive processing system that allows the trained satellite analysts within the Satellite Services Division (SSD) to manually integrate data from various automated fire detection algorithms with GOES and polar (AdvancedVery High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Fire Algorithm (MODIS) images. The result is a quality controlled display of the locations of fires and significant smoke plumes detected by meteorological satellites. The Analyzed Fires from Satellites is the Hazard Mapping System (HMS) fire and smoke product, made by a satellite analyst who quality checks the fire positions (red) and annotates visible smoke (gray). The analysts' shift runs from about 1-11pm EST/EDT. The first thing the analyst does isupdate the analysis for the previous day, to ensure it includes all fires detected for that calendar day. Then work begins on the current day's analysis, which will be updated periodically throughout the shift.

1 2015-04-22T00:00:00 NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
