Two bottom trawl surveys are conducted each year, one in the spring and one in the autumn. The survey is a standardized, stratified random design, with stratification based on bathymetry and multiple trawl sites within each stratum. Trawl sites are selected randomly, but the overall ship path is south to north. The survey covers the continental shelf and U.S. exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina into the Canadian EEZ. The primary gear is a bottom trawl, with CTD, multifrequency echosounder, and a host of other scientific sensor data collected ancillary to the bottom trawl catches. purpose: The NEFSC bottom trawl survey provides fisheries independent abundance and biological data for fisheries assessments along the U.S. east coast. status: (MD_ProgressCode) completed pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: John Galbraith organisationName: NEFSC positionName: Chief Scientist contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: 508-495-2000 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 166 Water Street city: Woods Hole administrativeArea: MA postalCode: 02543 country: USA electronicMailAddress: john.galbraith@noaa.gov role: (CI_RoleCode) principalInvestigator resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) notPlanned descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Ocean Acoustics > Acoustic Scattering keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Aquatic Sciences > Fisheries keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Ocean Acoustics keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems > Pelagic keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems > Benthic keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Aquatic Ecosystems keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Bathymetry keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Seafloor Topography type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Science Keywords date: (CI_Date) date: 2020-01-09 dateType: (CI_DateTypeCode) publication edition: 9.1 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Earth Science Data and Information System contactInfo: (CI_Contact) onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/learn/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords name: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keywords description: The information provided on this page seeks to define how the GCMD Keywords are structured, used and accessed. The ship's normal operating area was the Gulf of Maine, Georges Bank, and the continental shelf and slope from Southern New England to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Typical assessment work included groundfish surveys and Ecosystem Monitoring surveys. Research conducted from the Albatross IV provides an understanding of the physical and biological processes that control year class strength of key economical fish, shellfish and zooplankton species. The vessel was operated by NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations. The Albatross IV was decommissioned on 20 November 2008. sponsor: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: DOC/NOAA/OMAO/MOC-A > Marine Operations Center - Atlantic, NOAA Marine Operations, NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operations, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) facsimile: 757-441-6495 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: NOAA/OMAO/MOC-A deliveryPoint: 439 West York Street city: Norfolk administrativeArea: VA postalCode: 23510-1145 country: USA electronicMailAddress: David.A.Score@noaa.gov onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://www.omao.noaa.gov/omao/marine-operations-center-atlantic-moc name: Marine Operations Center - Atlantic description: NOAA Marine Operations Center-Atlantic (MOC-A) serves as a homeport for one NOAA survey ship and provides administrative, engineering, maintenance and logistical support to NOAA's Atlantic fleet. function: (CI_OnLineFunctionCode) information role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact sponsor: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: organisationName: DOC/NOAA/NMFS/NEFSC > Northeast Fisheries Science Center contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: 508-495-2000 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 166 Water Street city: Woods Hole administrativeArea: MA postalCode: 02543-1026 country: USA role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact instrument: (MI_Instrument) citation: (CI_Citation) title: Simrad EK60 Echosounder date: (inapplicable) identifier: (MD_Identifier) code: EK60 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: Simrad - Kongsberg Maritime AS contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: +47 3303 4000 (Norway) facsimile: +47 3304 2987 (Norway) address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: P.O.
