Specifically, during each cruise, transducers will be installed on a rigid pole mounted to the side of the ship, and calibrated at sea for operating conditions following protocols developed by Dr. Boswell during the ONSAP/DAP cruises. The dynamics of the mesopelagic scattering community will be examined through the depth dependent scattering responses at both frequencies (18 and 38kHz) as well as through the difference between the mean volume backscattering strength (MVBS; in dB) at 18 kHz and 38 kHz (dMVBS(18-38)). In addition, scatterers in the upper water column (~150m) will be examined by analyzing the all four available frequencies. By integrating both methods, the magnitude of biological scattering at discrete-depth intervals will be classified into major taxonomic components (e.g., fluid-like crustaceans, swimbladdered fishes) based on resonant properties and behavior. The biological data and ship data collected during this cruise are available in GRIIDC datasets R4.x257.226:0001 and R4.x257.226:0011, respectively. purpose: o examine the spatial and temporal dynamics of deep sea nekton in the Gulf of Mexico through a multidisciplinary approach. status: (MD_ProgressCode) completed pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: Kevin Boswell organisationName: Florida International University positionName: Professor contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: 305-919-4009 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: Marine Sciences Building, 234 3000 NE 151st St. city: North Miami, administrativeArea: FL postalCode: 33181 country: USA electronicMailAddress: kevin.boswell@fiu.edu role: (CI_RoleCode) principalInvestigator resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) notPlanned descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Ocean Acoustics > Acoustic Scattering keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Aquatic Sciences > Fisheries keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Ocean Acoustics keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems > Pelagic keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Marine Ecosystems > Benthic keyword: Earth Science > Biosphere > Ecosystems > Aquatic Ecosystems keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Bathymetry keyword: Earth Science > Oceans > Bathymetry/Seafloor Topography > Seafloor Topography type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Science Keywords date: (CI_Date) date: 2020-01-09 dateType: (CI_DateTypeCode) publication edition: 9.1 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Earth Science Data and Information System contactInfo: (CI_Contact) onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/learn/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords name: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keywords description: The information provided on this page seeks to define how the GCMD Keywords are structured, used and accessed. The new electronic hardware is combined with up to date PC processing and Windows operation. The EK60 provides facilities for accurate echo sounding, data storage, data analysis and reporting results. The system communication is through Ethernet, which gives flexibility in the location of the EK60 system units and allows easy access to data from other instruments or stations on a vessel network. A post processing software, BI60, is also included in the EK60 system. |
