Oceanographic Survey in the American Samoa Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) (OES0403, EK60)

Oceanographic data were collected along predetermined transects in the American Samoa EEZ. CTD cats were conducted at predetermined stations. CTDs were equipped with oxygen sensors and fluorometers, and chlorophyll and nutrients were measured at discrete depths. Biological backscatter were monitored using the EK60 echosounder system (38, & 120 kHz) along the transects. Currents were continuously recorded using an RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP).

Distribution Formats
  • Kongsberg/Simrad instrument files (.raw or .wcd)(Version:1)
    • File Specification: Kongsberg/Simrad .raw files are generated by ME70, EK60 or ES60 instruments. They contain power and optionally angular position data with each beam/frequency identified by an independent channel. See the Simrad interface specification manual for further information. The .wcd files are generated by Kongsberg EM302 or EM122 instruments. See Kongsberg documentation for more information.

Purpose The scientific objectives of this cruise are to collect data on physical and biological oceanographic properties of the American Samoa EEZ where dynamic eddy activity is created by the interactions of the eastward flowing South Equatorial Counter Current and the westward flowing South Equatorial Current. Mesoscale eddy activity varies at different temporal scales and seems to affect catch rates of the albacore in the region.
