Southeast Fishery-Independent Survey (PC1204, ME70)
The Southeast Fishery-Independent Survey (SEFIS) was created by the National Marine
Fisheries Service in 2010 and operates out of the NOAA Beaufort Laboratory. The survey
conducts fishery-independent sampling and related applied research, focusing on the
assessment of spatial variability in distribution and abundance of marine fish species
within the snapper-grouper complex, via data collected from fish traps, video cameras,
and acoustic gears. The NOAA ship Pisces departed Morehead City, NC on 24 July 2012
for a SEFIS research cruise in continental shelf and shelf-break waters off the southeastern
U.S. During this survey, 385 sq km of multibeam data were collected from 29 discrete
areas in the sea area of Raleigh Bay, NC. A total of 328 concomitant trap-camera
samples were collected. During PC1204, Caris multibeam processing methods were used
at sea for the first time. SEFIS program website:

Purpose | Increase the spatial footprint and sample size of fishery-independent sampling in US south Atlantic continental shelf waters (roughtly between Cape Canaveral, FL and Savannah, GA). Mapping data are used to improve survey design and to expand knowledge of hardbottom habitats in the southeast US. |

Lineage Statement | File naming convention errors occurred. Specifically, file names (e.g., PC1204C-D20120726-T212907.raw) include the cruise name (PC1204) followed by an alpha code that indicates the ME70 beam configuration in use. If the letter is "C", the beam configuration file was provided by George Randy Cutter, NOAA NMFS Southwest Fisheries Science Center. If the letter is "W", the beam configuration file was provided by Tom Weber, Univ. of New Hampshire. Instances occurred where the incorrect code was imprinted on file names. Data users are urged to verify beam configuration by inspecting raw data file structure (e.g., the "W" configuration is composed of 31 beams). |
