The frequency band normally used is from about 1 MHz to about 20 MHz though some ionosondes operate down to about 0.20 MHz and up to 30 MHz. The ionograms actually show the time of travel of the pulse signal from the transmitter to the ionosphere and back to the receiver. A given station typically generates a sweep-frequency ionogram in about two minutes. Normally four ionograms are taken per hour, one at each quarter hour. As of May 1994, there are approximately 16,140 rolls of ionogram film at our Data Center. Most of these photographic records (ionograms) were recorded on 35mm film, but there are some 16mm ionogram film. One month of 35mm ionograms averages about 800 feet of film. These rolls of film are kept off site but can be retrieved when needed. If you would like to study specific ionograms, researchers are welcome at the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (formerly National Geophysical Data Center), but are requested to give adequate advance notice of their visit so that appropriate arrangements may be made for their work space at the Data Center. Some ionograms were digitized and are stored in TIF G4 format. purpose: Research - Radio Frequency Reflection status: (MD_ProgressCode) underDevelopment pointOfContact: (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: Justin Mabie organisationName: DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI > National Centers for Environmental Information, NESDIS, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce positionName: Space and Terrestrial Weather Specialist contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: (303) 497-6135 facsimile: (303) 497-6513 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 325 Broadway, Mail Code E/GC4 city: Boulder administrativeArea: CO postalCode: 80305-3328 country: USA electronicMailAddress: Justin.Mabie@noaa.gov role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) continual descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: EARTH SCIENCE > SOLAR PHYSICS > Solar Energetic > Particles > Particle Density type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: NASA/GCMD Earth Science Keywords date: (unknown) descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Ionosonde keyword: Bottomside keyword: Ionograms keyword: Space Physics - Ionospheric Science type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Uncontrolled Keywords date: (unknown) descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: ICSU-WDS > International Council for Science - World Data System type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) project thesaurusName: (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Project Keywords date: (CI_Date) date: 2020-01-09 dateType: (CI_DateTypeCode) publication edition: 9.1 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Earth Science Data and Information System contactInfo: (CI_Contact) onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/learn/find-data/idn/gcmd-keywords name: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keywords description: The information provided on this page seeks to define how the GCMD Keywords are structured, used and accessed.
