GOES-8 started the era of high cadence observations (2 Hz) as it began operations in 1995. While magnetometer data from GOES 8 - 15 satellites have been available for many years, the current data set offers several major improvements. The new archive includes the highest temporal cadence (2 Hz), recomputed means, corrected calibration parameters, updated quality flagging, vector measurements in geophysically relevant coordinates, and full ephemeris information. In addition, this data set follows a unified standard format -- netCDF-4 -- that is also used in GOES-R series Level 2 magnetometer files. The dataset spans the time period from 1995 to the present. purpose: To improve empirical models of the geomagnetic field and to allow estimations of electromagnetic wave power in bands important for magnetospheric plasma processes. credit: Abdelqader, Ahmed; Boudouridis, Athanasios; Newman, Ann; Califf, Sam; Matheson, Lorne; Rodriguez, Juan V.; Tilton, Margaret; Wilkinson, Dan status: (MD_ProgressCode) planned pointOfContact: RR (CI_ResponsibleParty) individualName: Redmon, Robert organisationName: DOC/NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI > National Centers for Environmental Information, NESDIS, NOAA, Department of Commerce contactInfo: (CI_Contact) phone: (CI_Telephone) voice: 303-497-4331 address: (CI_Address) deliveryPoint: 325 Broadway city: Boulder administrativeArea: CO postalCode: 80305-3328 country: USA electronicMailAddress: ionosonde@noaa.gov hoursOfService: 7:30-5:00 Mountain contactInstructions: role: (CI_RoleCode) pointOfContact resourceMaintenance: (MD_MaintenanceInformation) maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency: (MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode) daily graphicOverview: (MD_BrowseGraphic) fileName: https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/stp/image/goes-over-earth.jpg fileDescription: Image of NOAA GOES spacecraft. fileType: JPEG descriptiveKeywords: (MD_Keywords) keyword: Earth Science > Sun-Earth Interactions > Ionosphere/Magnetosphere Dynamics > Magnetic Fields/Magnetic Currents type: (MD_KeywordTypeCode) theme thesaurusName: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Science Keywords (CI_Citation) title: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Science Keywords date: (CI_Date) date: 2017-04-24 dateType: (CI_DateTypeCode) publication edition: 8.5 citedResponsibleParty: (CI_ResponsibleParty) organisationName: NASA/GSFC/SED/ESD/GCDC/GCMD > Global Change Master Directory, Global Change Data Center, Earth Sciences Division, Science and Exploration Directorate, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA contactInfo: (CI_Contact) onlineResource: (CI_OnlineResource) linkage: https://earthdata.nasa.gov/about/gcmd/global-change-master-directory-gcmd-keywords protocol: HTTPS applicationProfile: Web Browser name: Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keywords description: The information provided on this page seeks to define how the GCMD Keywords are structured, used and accessed. HP is perpendicular to the satellite's orbital plane. HE lies parallel to the satellite-Earth center line and points earthward. HN is perpendicular to both HP and HE, and points eastward. They measure the magnitude and direction of the Earth's geomagnetic field, detect variations in the magnetic field near the spacecraft, provide alerts of solar wind shocks or sudden impulses that impact the magnetosphere, and assess the level of geomagnetic activity. instrument: GOES 13-15 Series Magnetometer (MI_Instrument) identifier: (MD_Identifier) code: GOES 13-15 Series Magnetometer type: magnetometer description: These spacecraft each feature dual flux-gate magnetometers on a 8.5 meter long boom. The magnetometers are provided by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), Inc. in Columbia, Maryland. They measure the magnitude and direction of the Earth's geomagnetic field, detect variations in the magnetic field near the spacecraft, provide alerts of solar wind shocks or sudden impulses that impact the magnetosphere, and assess the level of geomagnetic activity. One magnetometer sensor is mounted on the end of the boom 27.9 feet (8.5 m) from the spacecraft. The other is positioned on the same boom 2.6 feet (0.8 m) closer to the spacecraft. The second magnetometer sensor serves as a backup in case the first magnetometer sensor fails and provides for better calibration of the magnetometer data channel. The two magnetometers can operate independently and simultaneously. Each magnetometer features three orthogonal elements that provide magnetic field measurements in three mutually perpendicular components: HP, HE and HN. HP is perpendicular to the satellite's orbital plane. HE lies parallel to the satellite-Earth center line and points earthward. HN is perpendicular to both HP and HE, and points eastward. platform: (MI_Platform) identifier: (MD_Identifier) code: GOES-8 > Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 8 description: GOES-8 - Spacecraft letter: I.
