GOES-R Series Level 1b Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) Product in FITS Format

GOES-R SUVI L1b (FITS)

The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) Level 1b Solar Imagery: X-Ray product contains an image of the Sun at one of six wavelengths with different exposure times, and metadata required for exploitation and higher level processing. This product also contains an array containing a quality flag for each pixel in the solar image.

Files for Sept. 2017 are test files produced by NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information in Boulder, Colorado. The currently available data are processed from Level-0 SUVI files in Boulder, and are not necessarily representative of what data SUVI users will encounter in GOES-R Rebroadcast (GRB) produced by the GOES-R Ground Segment. The file metadata are populated with as much information as possible for users to interpret these observations, but some fields may be missing. Users requiring assistance with these files can contact the NCEI SUVI team by emailing goesr.suvi@noaa.gov.

Supplemental Information
The files provided for Sept. 2017 are test files produced by NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information in Boulder, Colorado. These data are processed from Level-0 SUVI files in Boulder, and are not necessarily representative of what data SUVI users will encounter in GOES-R Rebroadcast (GRB) produced by the GOES-R Ground Segment. The file metadata are populated with as much information as possible for users to interpret these observations, but some fields may be missing. Users requiring assistance with these files can contact the NCEI SUVI team by emailing goesr.suvi@noaa.gov.
Purpose GOES-16 data from May 5, 2018 are solar observations made when the SUVI was in Provisional status. Data from the September 6 and September 10 2017 flares are considered preliminary. However, they will provide interesting observations of the CLASS X solar flare
Use Limitations
  • For the September 2017 files, the GOES-16 SUVI was in non-operational status. Only preliminary validation for the calibration of these data has been completed, so the user bears all responsibility for inspecting the data prior to use and for the manner in which the data are used. These observations are not appropriate for space weather forecasting activities.

Processing Steps
  • SUVI is a solar imager capable of operation in the soft EUV to EUV wavelength range. It provides full-disk solar images at high cadence around the clock, except for brief periods during satellite eclipse. The operational goals of the SUVI are to image the solar emissions and temperatures within the EUV spectrum, to locate coronal holes for the forecasting of recurring geomagnetic activity, to locate solar flares for the forecasting of energetic particle events, to assess active region complexity for solar flare forecasting, and to determine the signatures of Coronal Mass Ejections (CME). The processing algorithm used applies several correction and calibration processes in order to generate the photon fluxes for the Level 1b product. The GOES-R Ground System created the files after the SUVI reached Provisional Status. For Sept. 2017 data, NCEI processed Level 0 SUVI data to obtain the L1b data. NCEI also created a new headers for these September files.
