OCEAN DRILLING PROGRAM July 1989 DATA FILE DOCUMENTATION AGEPROFILE DATA FILE I. INTRODUCTION The Ageprofile data file contains geological age assignments for holes drilled by ODP on the JOIDES Resolution. Also included is information about the biostratigraphic zones used to determine the geological age. The age assignments were made by the participating shipboard scientists on each cruise. The data are obtained primarily from the ODP Initial Reports and updated as need from the ODP Scientific Results. Each record in the data file represents an age unit. However, each unit has a maximum thickness of a single core (about 9.5 meters). This means that if an age unit is greater than the length of one core, it is then represented by two or more records as needed. All data within a record are reported downhole. For example, if an age range is given, the age at the top of the unit is listed first in the AGE field, with the age at the bottom of the unit listed second. If you have problems or questions concerning these data, please contact: Data Librarian, Data Base Group Ocean Drilling Program Texas A&M University Research Park 1000 Discovery Drive College Station, Texas 77845-9547 U.S.A. LEGS IN THE DATA FILE The Ageprofile data file contains data from Legs 101 to 129. No data were collected on Legs 102, 106 and 109. III. BIBLIOGRAPHY Explanatory Notes chapters, 1986 - 1990. EXPLANATION OF THE AGEPROFILE DATA ITEMS LEG - Number identifying the cruise. The Ocean Drilling Program started numbering the cruises of the JOIDES Resolution at Leg 101. SUBLEG - Letter identifying a subleg or transit. A subleg is the continuation of a Leg after a port call; it often involves a crew change. SITE - Number identifying the site. A site is the position of a beacon around which holes are drilled. HOLE - Letter identifying the hole. CORE - Number identifying the core. Cores are numbered serially from the top of the hole downward. CORETYPE - A letter code identifying the drill bit/coring method used to retrieve the core. The coretype codes are: B - Drill Bit C - Center Bit D - Positive Displacement H - Hydraulic (Advanced) Piston Core I - Interstitial Water Sample (used on Legs 101-116 only) M - Miscellaneous N - Downhole Mud Motor (Navidrill) P - Pressure Core Barrel R - Rotary S - Side Wall Core W - Wash Core X - Extended Core Barrel TOP_DEPTH - The meters below sea floor to the top of the age unit. BOTTOM_DEPTH - The meters below sea floor to the bottom of the age unit. AGE - Geological age or age range assigned to the age unit. An alphabetical code is used to indicate the age (see AGE CODE table at the end of this document). Hyphens are used to separate ages in a continuous age range. Commas are used to separate distinct ages that are not necessarily continuous. Slashes (/) are included as they were reported in the data source. TOP_AGE_CODE - A numberic code representing the first (or only) geological age listed in the "AGE" field. The hierarchial code (taken from the DSDP Agecodes data file, see AGE CODE table at the end of this document) is designed to provide age level information as shown below. CODE DIGIT AGE LEVEL ========== ============== 1 ERA 2-3 PERIOD 4 SUBPERIOD 5 EPOCH 6 SUBEPOCH 7 STAGE 8 SUBSTAGE BOTTOM_AGE_CODE - A numberic code representing the last geological age of an age range listed in the "AGE" field. The hierarchial code (taken from the DSDP Agecodes data file, see AGE CODE table at the end of this document) is described above (see TOP_AGE_CODE). FLAG - An "I" indicates a legitimate age inversion; a "*" can represent a missing or drilled (but not cored) interval, a core with no recovery, or a wash core greater than 10 m. long. SOURCE - A one letter code for the data source. I = ODP Initial Reports, S = ODP Scientific Results. FORAM ZONE - Biostratigraphic zone assignment(s) based on the foraminfera population. FORAM ABUNDANCE - Abundance of foraminfera going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the foraminfera abundance. V = Very; A = Abundant; C = Common; F = Frequent; R = Rare; B = Barren. FORAM PRESERVATION - Preservation of foraminfera going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the state of preservation of the foraminfera. V = Very; G = Good; M = Moderate; P = Poor. NANNO ZONE - Biostratigraphic zone assignment(s) based on the nannofossil population. NANNO ABUNDANCE - Abundance of nannofossils going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the nannofossil abundance. V = Very; A = Abundant; C = Common; F = Frequent; R = Rare; B = Barren. NANNO PRESERVATION - Preservation of nannofossils going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the state of preservation of the nannofossils. V = Very; G = Good; M = Moderate; P = Poor. RAD ZONE - Biostratigraphic zone assignment(s) based on the radiolaria population. RAD ABUNDANCE - Abundance of radiolaria going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the radiolaria abundance. V = Very; A = Abundant; C = Common; F = Frequent; R = Rare; B = Barren. RAD PRESERVATION - Preservation of radiolaria going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the state of preservation of the radiolaria. V = Very; G = Good; M = Moderate; P = Poor. DIATOM ZONE - Biostratigraphic zone assignment(s) based on the diatom population. DIATOM ABUNDANCE - Abundance of diatoms going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the diatom abundance. V = Very; A = Abundant; C = Common; F = Frequent; R = Rare; B = Barren. DIATOM PRESERVATION - Preservation of diatoms going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the state of preservation of the diatom. V = Very; G = Good; M = Moderate; P = Poor. OTHER NAME - The name of an additional fossil group that was used to identify the geological age of the unit. OTHER ZONE - Biostratigraphic zone assignment(s) based on the population of the additional fossil group. OTHER ABUNDANCE - Abundance of the additional fossil group going downhole. One letter codes are used to indicate the abundance of the additional fossil group. V = Very; A = Abundant; C = Common; F = Frequent; R = Rare; B = Barren.
