OCEAN DRILLING PROGRAM July 1990 DATA FILE DOCUMENTATION IGNEOUS / METAMORPHIC ROCKS HARDROCK VISUAL CORE DESCRIPTIONS I. INTRODUCTION The Hardrock Visual Core Description data files contain the visual descriptions of the hardrock cores collected on the JOIDES Resolution. These descriptions were written by the shipboard scientists on each cruise as the cores were retrieved from the ocean floor. There are two Hardrock Visual Core Description data files. The first (called Harvi_F) contains the descriptions for fine-grained (and medium-grained) rocks, primarily extrusives, (e.g., basalt and related rocks), dikes, etc. The second data file (called Harv_C) is for coarse-grained rocks or plutonics (e.g., gabbros, peridotites, serpentinites). Two classification schemes for hardrocks have been used onboard the JOIDES Resolution. Cores collected on Legs 103-105, and 107 were described according to the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) classification scheme which can be found in the DSDP "Explanatory Notes" chapter of the Leg 83 Initial Reports volume (see Bibliography below). Cores on the remaining Legs were described using the ODP classification scheme as outlined in the "Shipboard Scientist's Handbook" (see Bibliography below). If you have problems or questions concerning these data, please contact: Data Librarian, Data Base Group Ocean Drilling Program Texas A&M University Research Park 1000 Discovery Drive College Station, Texas 77845-9547 U.S.A. LEGS IN THE DATA FILE The data file contains data from all Legs on which hardrocks were recovered up to Leg 129. This includes Legs 103-107, 109, 111, 113-115, 118-121, 123-124, 125-129. III. FINED-GRAINED ROCK DATA ITEMS The following table lists the data items and their formats for the Fine- grained rock (Harvi_F) data file. For data requests other than on paper (ie. on magnetic tape), an accompanying sheet will contain any additional information needed to read the data. EXPLANATION OF FINE-GRAINED ROCK DATA ITEMS LEG - Number identifying the cruise. The Ocean Drilling Program started numbering the cruises of the JOIDES Resolution at Leg 101. SUBLEG - Letter identifying a subleg or transit. A subleg is the continuation of a Leg after a port call; it often involves a crew change. SITE - Number identifying the site. A site is the position of a beacon around which holes are drilled. HOLE - Letter identifying the hole. CORE - Number identifying the core. Cores are numbered serially from the top of the hole downward. CORETYPE - A letter code identifying the drill bit/coring method used to retrieve the core. The coretype codes are: B - Drill Bit C - Center Bit D - Positive Displacement H - Hydraulic (Advanced) Piston Core I - Interstitial Water Sample (used on Legs 101-116 only) M - Miscellaneous N - Downhole Mud Motor (Navidrill) P - Pressure Core Barrel R - Rotary S - Side Wall Core W - Wash Core X - Extended Core Barrel SECTION - A core is cut into 1.5-meter-long sections that are numbered serially from the top of the core. A core with full recovery will have 7 sections and a core catcher and be approximately 9.8 meters long. TOP_INTERVAL - The location of the top of the first piece being described within a section in centimeters. UNIT_NUMBER - Number of the lithologic unit. SUB_UNIT - Sub-unit letter of the lithologic unit. PIECES - Pieces and Subpieces being described. OBSERVER - Three or four letter code identifying the person who described the interval. ROCKNAME - Rock name of unit being described. CONTACT - Description of the upper and lower contacts of the unit. PHENOCRYSTS: MINERAL_NAME - Name of the phenocryst mineral. PERCENT - Percent of the rock composed of this phenocryst. SIZE - Size range of the phenocryst in mm. DESCRIPTION - Description of the phenocryst. PHENOCRYSTS_COMMENTS - Additional comments on the phenocrysts. GROUNDMASS - Description of the groundmass. COLOR - Color of the rock. May include color number from the Munsell color chart. VESICLES: PERCENT - Percent of the rock which is vesicated. SIZE - Size range of the vesicles in mm. SHAPE - Description of the shape of the vesicles. DISTRIBUTION - Distribution of the vesicles. MIAROLES - Description of the Miaroles. COMMENTS - Additional comments on the vesicles. STRUCTURE - Description of the structure. ALTERATION - Alteration of the rock. VEINS_FRACTURES: SIZE - Size ranges of the veins/fractures in cm. ORIENTATION - Orientation of the veins/fractures. PERCENT - Percent of rock which is veined/fractured. COMMENTS - Additional comments on the veins/fractures. MAIN_COMMENTS - Includes any additional observations or comments about the record or a particular data item. MORE_DATA - A "Y" (for "yes") indicates that more data or information was available on the paper, but could not be included in the data file, for example any additional diagrams drawn by the observer. VI. COARSE-GRAINED ROCK DATA ITEMS The following table lists the data items and their formats for the Coarse-grained rock (Harvi_C) data file.
