OCEAN DRILLING PROGRAM revised DATA FILE DOCUMENTATION JUNE 1990 SITE SUMMARY I. INTRODUCTION The Site Summary data file contains general information about every hole cored or sampled by the JOIDES Resolution. Location, drilling, and recovery data are reported. This file is created for and distributed to the National Geophysical Data Center, fulfilling a contractural obligation of the Ocean Drilling Program. This new addition of the site summary documentation record contains the positions for the translated information that was appended to the site summary data file. This version contains the field positions with the spaces between each field deleted. If you have any problems or questions concerning these data, please contact: Data Librarian, Data Base Group Ocean Drilling Program Texas A&M University Research Park 1000 Discovery Drive College Station, Texas 77845-9547 U.S.A. EXPLANATION OF THE SITE SUMMARY DATA ITEMS LEG - Number identifying the cruise. The Ocean Drilling Program started numbering the cruises of the JOIDES Resolution at Leg 101. SUBLEG - Letter identifying a subleg or transit. A subleg is the continuation of a Leg in the same area with the same objectives after a port call and crew change. SITE - Number identifying the site. A site is the position of a beacon around which holes are drilled. HOLE - Letter identifying the Hole. LATITUDE - The latitude position of the hole. Recorded in degrees and fractions of a degree with "-" for south. This location is calculated by averaging satellite fixes taken while on the hole. LONGITUDE - The longitude position of the hole. Recorded in degrees and fractions of a degree with "-" for west. ARRIVAL - Arrival date on the hole is defined as the date the drill string spuds into the seafloor. DEPARTURE - Departure date from the hole is defined as the date that the drill string is no longer being pulled up from that hole. TIME_ON_HOLE - Total amount of time spent on the hole. Format is dd:hh:mm (days:hours:minutes). This is provided by the Operations Superintendent. OCEAN NAME - Three letter code indicating the name of the ocean in which the site was drilled. The Ocean Name codes are: ANT - Antarctic ART - Arctic ATL - Atlantic IND - Indian PAC - Pacific AREA - The area of the ocean where the site was drilled, area being N or S (north or south), using the equator as the dividing line. SEA - The sea in which the site was drilled. The Sea Name codes are: AEGEAN - Aegean ARAB - Arab BAFFIN - Baffin BERING - Bering BLACK - Black CARIB - Caribbean CORAL - Coral GADEN - Gulf of Aden GCALIF - Gulf of California GMEX - Gulf of Mexico GREENL - Greenland JAPAN - Japan LABRAD - Labrador MED - Mediterranean NORWEG - Norwegian PHIL - Philippine REDSEA - Red Sea ROSS - Ross TASMAN - Tasman TYRRHE - Tyrrhenian WEDDEL - Weddell EQUIPMENT_TEST - Y or N, was hole devoted to equipment testing? WELL_LOG - Y or N, was any well logging done? REENTRY - Y or N, was cone positioned and reentry attempted? SURVEY - Y or N, if a site survey was run during this leg because the pre-existing survey was insufficient. TERMINATION - Reason for termination of drilling. Codes: D - Drill bit/core barrel H - Hyrocarbon hazard I - Illness or injury L - Operation limit M - Mechanical/equipment failure O - Objective reached R - Re-entry failure S - Chief scientist decision T - Time constraints W - Weather CORE_METHOD - Indicates methods used to core or sample the hole. For each method used in a hole, Y is entered in it's field. If the method was not used the field is left blank. ROTARY HPC PCB EX_CB DOWNHOLE_MUD_MOTOR DRILL_BIT CENTER_BIT WASH_CORE SIDE_WALL IN_SITU_WATER MISC HEAT_FLOW PRESSURE DPM_SEA - This value is used by ODP as the official water depth and is defined as meters below sea level using drill pipe measurement. (DPM_RIG minus RIGFLOOR_TO_SEA) TOTAL_PENETRATION - Distance from the seafloor to bottom of hole in meters. (Greatest BOTTOM_DEPTH in Corelog for the hole.) CORED_PENETRATION - Total distance cored in meters. (For each Corelog record in a given hole, subtract TOP_DEPTH from BOTTOM_DEPTH and add the results.) DRILLED_PENETRATION - Total distance drilled but not cored in meters. (TOTAL_PENETRATION minus CORED_PENETRATION) NUMBER_CORES_RECOVERED - Number of cores recovered. (The number of the core with the greatest BOTTOM_DEPTH in the hole.) METERS_RECOVERED - Total meters of core recovered. (Sum of all the LINER lengths in Corelog for the hole.) PERCENT_RECOVERY - Percent core recovery. (METERS_RECOVERED divided by CORED_PENETRATION times 100) SEDIMENT_FEATURE - Physiographic feature of sediment drilled. AB FLR - Abyssal floor KNOLL - Knoll BANK - Bank MOUND - Mound BASIN - Basin MTN - Mountain BENCH - Bench PLATU - Plateau C RISE - Continental rise PLAIN - Plain CANYON - Canyon RIDGE - Ridge CHANNL - Channel RISE - Rise CNT SL - Continental slope SCARP - Scarp CONE - Cone SD PND - Sediment pond CREST - Crest SEAMNT - Seamount DIAPIR - Diapir SHELF - Continental shelf ESCARP - Escarpment SLOPE - Slope FAN - Fan SPUR - Spur FLANK - Flank SYNCL - Syncline FRACT - Fracture zone TERR - Terrace GAP - Abyssal gap TR ZON - Transition zone GRABEN - Graben TRENCH - Trench GUYOT - Guyot TROUGH - Trough HILL - Hill VALLEY - Valley OLDEST_SED_SUB_DEPTH - Sub-bottom depth of oldest sediment, in meters.
