GOES-12 Commanded to Safe Mode
Due to yesterday's light leak anomaly, GOES-12 has been placed into safe mode as a precaution.

September 18, 2006 19:35:43UT
GOES-12 light leak anomaly
A major new off-band light leak appeared in the GOES-12 SXI images starting at 2006-09-18 19:35UT. The image taken with the PTHNB analysis filter at 19:34:02UT seems fine.  The image taken at 19:35:43UT shows a major new off band light leak that has persisted since its first occurrence. An image taken between these two images, at 19:35:02UT, shows a  severely attenuated X-ray image of the Sun. ( Browse the sequence. ) The failure was probably taking place during this exposure. The most likely failure mode would be one or more segments of the entrance filters failing. Perhaps at 19:35:02UT a filter was curling over on itself cutting down the X-rays.
More details will be available on SWPC's SXI status page.

The GOES-12 SXI data flow resumes.

February 12, 2006
The GOES-12 SXI experienced a high voltage system anomaly on Sunday February 12, 2006 at approximately 1104 UT and automatically went into safe mode. At first glance the anomaly appears to be in the same class as the previous sets of HV problems. SXI will remain in safe mode while SWPC and SOCC staff analyze the telemetry available and plan our response.

October 19, 2005
GOES-12 SXI Testing: Image collection resumed at a reduced voltage and resultant reduced image quality.
More details are available on SWPC's SXI status page.

September 11, 2005
GOES-12 SXI Shutdown: Just before noon UT on September 11, 2005 the SXI instrument was shutdown due to an anomalous voltage fluctuation.

GOES-12 SXI recorded a series of X-class flares from January 15 - 20. Two special movies were generated that illustrates this interval of high activity. SXI performs double duty by recording solar images and energetic ions!

January 18, 2005:
New GOES-12 SXI Coronal Hole Product
Beginning on Dec 15, 2004, NOAA/Space Weather Prediction Center started routine production of a coronal hole image product. This product is created 4 times per day (01:00, 07:00, 13:00, and 19:00 UT), for the purpose of identifying coronal holes, and they become available at approximately 08:00, 14:00, 20:00, and 02:00 UT. Each coronal hole image is created from a sum of 12 hours of images (corrected for solar rotation), spanning the period 6 hours prior to the nominal coronal hole image time to 6 hours after . The coronal hole image is composited from 3-second integration, Level-1 (calibrated) images taken through the Thin Polyimide (PTHN) filter.

The need to create this new product was driven by the loss of the ability to use the SXI Open Filter position and by anomalous high voltage power supply (HVPS) behavior. The inability to use the Open Filter was caused by the failure of at least 1 of the 6 entrance filters that normally shield the SXI optics from visible and ultraviolet light. The HVPS behavior has forced imaging to be conducted at a lower than desired gain.

The SXI Coronal Hole product is now available online. View these data in the Browse and Movie sections. View coverage in the Summary section, and download the data in the Search sections.

Real-time access to GOES SXI data is accomplished through a cooperative effort between NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) and National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). SWPC collects the data from GOES-12, provides initial processing, and integrates the observation into their real-time space weather alert and prediction services. The data are instantaneously transmitted to NGDC where they are archived and made available via this web interface.
