Oxygen XML Editor is a cross platform xml editor. Oxygen provides a robust environment for editing metadata in XML format. The purpose of this page is to share metadata authoring work flow and user tips in this environment. (To learn more or download a trial version go to http://www.oxygenxml.com.)

Setting Up Oxygen

Create a project

Working projects may help you keep the metadata organized and edit or validate multiple files at the same time

  1. Select Project button
  2. Select New Project from drop down menu
  3. Select Show Project View from down menu
  4. Right click on newProject.xpr and select Add Files or Import Folders
  5. Find your xml files on your desktop
  6. To re-use a project: Select the Save icon, save to appropriate desktop folder and rename

Associating FGDC Schemas

When a schema is associated, Oxygen will validate the xml against the standard and provide a list of available metadata elements while editing

  1. Open a metadata file
  2. Select Associate Schema icon and pop-up box will appear
  3. Select XML Schema tab and copy/past this URL to the schema: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/metadata/published/xsd/ngdcSchema/schema.xsd
  4. select OK
  5. The root element of your FGDC metadata should now look like this:
