The NMMR can import FGDC XML files, where each record is a single file.

You must first convert these to FGDC XML. There are several ways to do this. Here are my notes from converting an FGDC XML file from MGG:

MP must be loaded on the machine. Obtain it at http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/

I did a conversion of 2004_RCM10.met to XML using mp, and it works fine, with a couple minor caveats:
+
-

+
-
# It changes Metadata_Standard_Version: from "June 8, 1994" to "FGDC-STD-001-1998". So maybe these are really old files?
+
-
# The plain text metadata elements are all double-spaced; i.e. every line of text is followed by an empty line. This could be an artifact of moving files between Windows and Unix machines. So we would want to be careful to handle them properly before converting them (eg. ftp in 'ascii' mode), though it's not critical.

Here is how you convert a file on unix (or a command prompt on Windows):
+
-

+
-
<pre>$ mp -x 2004_RCM10.xml 2004_RCM10.met</pre>

If you have many files to convert, you can automate this with a shell script, perl, or the "MP Batch" Windows application. However, a review I read of MP Batch (http://sco.wisc.edu/wisclinc/metatool/mpbatch.htm) mentions a serious concern about doing this: you will have to ignore errors in parsing the input metadata files. This should only be done if you're sure the metadata is clean. It's probably better to manually convert one file at a time if feasible.

These are XML files where the root element is <metadata>.

They can be imported into the NMMR in two ways:
+
-

+
-
# On the Create, Import from XML page, click Browse to choose a file from your local hard drive. Repeat for each file.
+
-
# To import all files at once, they need to be put into a single directory on the metadata1 server under /metadata/data/import/. Then the 'admin' user can go to the Admin, Import Records page and specify that directory (eg: /mnt/metadata/data/import/playaround) to import. Unlike using MP Batch, this is a reasonable thing to batch process, since the records have already parsed correctly in mp, and it's unlikely you'll have errors importing.
+
-
** Note: All spaces and pre-formatted linewraps will be imported as well and may cause funky line breaks within the elements. I recommend ensuring that the xml document is not linewrapped before importing.
