Steffan Maus and Justin Mabie of the National Geophysical Data Center participated in a Space Weather Workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 12-16 Nov 2007. This Workshop wasw the kick-off meeting for the International Heliophysical Year (IHY) African campaign. The purposes of the IHY-Africa are to promote international cooperation among developing nationas in Africa, foster science education, help establish a critical science infrastructure, encourage African researchers to conduct research and publish findings in scientific journals, and promote establishment of an environmental monitoring network in Africa that furthers our understanding of global climate change. As a part of the IHY-Africa, NGDC is funded to oversee the data collection and distribution of GPS measurements for the research community.

Participation included 64 scientists from 19 African Nations. They were joined by colleagues from France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States; including representatives from the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of State.
